mission rocker need tlc

Post by mdprojects »

Hi, I just picked up an old oak Mission style rocker that needs some sprucing up. overall the piece is sound, but the finish here and there is uneven...especially on the top surface of the arms , the color of the arms is very greyed out compared to the rest of the piece. Looks to me like either sun or water faded, like it may have spent part of it's life outside. I was wondering about the best approach to refinishing just some areas of the chair rather than messing with the nice color elsewhere.
Can I just steel wool the areas in question and use some gel stain to bring it up closer to the desired color? Then what would be my best sealer after that?
thanks in advance ;)
