This piece has real sentimental value to my wife. I'm going to refinish it for her; however, I'm stuck before I even get started. I don't know when it was built, or what "style" it is (ie mid-century Danish, victorian, midwest el-cheapo, etc). How much attention do I need to pay to matching the type and color of finish to the design elements? Right now it's white-washed with paint--which doesn't seem right, but nor does putting a ultra high gloss black laquer like a lot of the asian furniture. If I knew what "style" it was, I'm thinking it might be easier to pick a finish. Any ideas?
