Help stripping stained teak veneer dining table.

Postby JuliusTweezer » Wed Mar 24, 2021 6:38 pm

It's been a nightmare stripping this table. The finish itself required a good couple coats of stripper. My question is with the veneer table top, I've already done 4 rounds of stripping and its as dark as the last when I scrape it and now the one side has gotten significantly darker than it ever was. its more like a black walnut and not the red mahogany it originally seemed to be. I'm being very liberal in each of my coats an let it sit there for 20-40 mins, continuously checking on it and reapplying to any spots that seem to dry up and washing with spirits in between. Any thoughts? or do I just keep going at it with the stripper? It's vintage mid century, can I go at it with some bleach or will that mess with the veneer and glue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, after each stripping I'm wiping down with mineral spirits and letting that dry and then repeating the process. Its stair or dye. It took two rounds of stripping to just get the finish off which seemed like wax which makes me think they could of used minwax to finish it, but I don't know a whole lot. I reached out to the company which refinished it last from their sticker on the bottom, but both times no response. When I was stripping the finish, it came off like an accordion and was almost weightless, I've never come across that before, not that that means anything.
