Newell Post Finishing

Postby aj9648 » Mon Feb 18, 2019 3:31 am

Hello

I have a newell post on my balustrade in the new place that I have moved into. It is a fairly new balustrade - only 6months old (ish)

However on closer inspection the post has these white marks on it. They are not scratches or anything that has accidentally been put on the post as the post is very smooth - it looks like its part of the grain on the wood which looks weird when the other posts have none of these marks

I am not a wood expert, in fact just a novice and wondered what my options were to try and get rid of these marks? I have attached a pic

Thanks

No pic showing.

Possibly, before finishing, someone used a filler on the wood (on a "defect"?) and applied the (stain?) finish over it. The filler didn't stain, didn't accept the stain and/or it was the wrong or mis-matched color filler.

If this is so, then lightly sand the area and color-in the white marks with (as best you can find) a marking pen, marks-a-lot, artist's paint, whatever, then apply a top coat finish.

Cause: as to the possible cause, White marks under a finish typically mean water is trapped under the finish
Solution: Just as Sonny says

My pic attachment is too big - only 180KB is allowed

Any other way to attach?

Load it onto a free picture page, like Flickr, photobucket, picasa, etc., then post a link here. Flickr is a Yahoo program, if you already have a Yahoo account. I use Flickr for my photo sharing, etc. It's easy and convenient for most purposes. https://www.flickr.com/photos/43836144@N04/
