French Provincial bedroom suite

Postby Gypsy » Thu Sep 21, 2017 7:00 pm

My bedroom suite is in need of as the pain is chipped and starting to go powdery. All flat surfaces are covered with glass. I thought to start with a small occasional table. I carefully removed the glass and started sanding. My intent was to get a reasonable surface and chalk paint then wax the intricate carvings. The original paint is some sort of enamel which has crazed and is cracking off. This suite is vintage and very well made. While sanding I noticed some numbers carved on the underside of the top. I looked into the maker and it was made by Ricketts and Thorp Rockdale Sydney. With a little more research found these manufactures where makers of "fine furniture ". When I wiped down the table with a damp cloth the bare timber was a lovely deep pinky/red. I was wondering if it was cedar? And how could I tell. The other thought was what would be the best way to remove all the paint from the top as sanding is diddicult on such hard paint. I was thinking of still painting from the top down as I think this is the best way to showcase the pieces. I will add some pics and would appreciate any advice you may have.
Thanking you in anticipation
