I am pretty new to refinishing and am not sure how to proceed. I have stripped and sanded a very old oak wardrobe and have some breakage on the door, which holds a mirror. The cracks have been glued and sanded flat, but the broken spots are darker and can be seen. I have been working with wood putty trying to repair them to look natural. However, they don't match the rest of the grain and I'm afraid they will look strange when I move onto the staining of the piece. Can I use paint or some kind of pen to draw in a little bit of grain on these areas before staining, or do I just have to stain the piece very dark so they won't be seen?

Any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, K. Johnson.
