A local church's exterior mahogany doors have become weathered. I can't determind the previous finish but suspect a polyurethane over some type of stain. In many places it is turning dark gray. I sanded, then applied Minwax spar varnish, but the area stayed very gray and no "red"
Did I need to sand deeper or bleach and stain? Is there likely some environmental/wood chemistry action going on that is naturally changing the color? These doors hang about thirty feet from a heavy traveled street.

John,

Unfortunately, you will have to strip and sand the doors, to get all the spar varnish, and any other finish, off. Oxalic acid works well on these problems. You can get oxalic acid at some paint stores or marine hardware stores. If that does not work, get a two part bleach kit, and follow the directions. I use the oxalic acid, a lot stronger than directions say. And, as always USE GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION. Since you are outside, you should have plenty of fresh air. But again, use caution.

I'll concur with Stuart. That or sand more of the surface, if the gray is not too deeply imbedded. Use a marine finish, not a typical furniture finish. And make sure the bottom edge of the door is sealed, also. If that bottom edge has been compromised (referred damage from the face damage), moisture may/will wick up into the wood from that area. I would recommend sanding/treating and refinishing that bottom edge, also, to make sure of its being sealed properly.

Thanks guys. I suspected as much but thought I would ask. Since there is a lot of paneling, I'll go with an acid treatment. I will take caution.
