Naptha will probably do a good cleaning job.
TSP would do, also, and might be safer, if you have concerns about using a volatile solvent. Follow instructions on the TSP box. Sometimes/often, TSP will "scuff" the surface of a clearcoat or painted finish, i.e., as it cleans, it will prep an existing finish, for refinishing. Since you plan to refinish the furniture, clean the whole thing with TSP, not just the damaged areas. The cleaning, alone, may be enough, that you wouldn't have to sand-prep, for refinishing.
