Antique Sewing Box Surface Repair

Postby bobby » Thu Jan 03, 2013 12:01 pm

Hi all

I was recently given this sewing box by an elderly family member. I believe it came from India perhaps 100 years ago. Unfortunately I know no more than that.

There is a light patch on the top surface. I'm not sure if this has happened since I had it, someone put a few light things on top of it for a while but I do not know what may have caused it. It might have already been there.

The area feels a little coarse in comparison to the rest. I lightly dabbed it with a cloth and the patch will take some moisture and darken but then lighten again once dry.

Sorry I do not know what type of wood it is if someone can help? How would I best go about repairing this (I have no experience and do not wish to try and refinish the whole box - is there some kind of wax / varnish / finish that I can apply to progressively darken this area?)

many thanks for any help you can give,
bobby
