Stain Color

Postby GaryFera » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:00 am

I conditioned the piece shown below using Zinsser SealCoat diluted 50% with denatured alcohol. Then I stained the piece with MinWax Wood Finish - Ebony #2718. I was purposely going for the very dark (black / ebony) look but that only happened in the centre area (which will be covered) where there was no wood conditioning done.

Is there any way to achieve the dark stain color AND also condition the wood to improve how evenly the wood accepts the stain? Would a greater than 50% dilution with denatured alcohol achieve this?

Thank you for listening. Am I asking too many questions?

You could try sanding to remove more Sealcoat. You could also try a gel stain
