restoring old finish (shellac??) on oak

I just picked up a set of glass doored barrister bookcases. The finish is generally in excellent condition with very few scratches. There are a few places the finish is alligatored. The finish has obviously darkened as the flecks and rays in the quartersawn panels, stiles and rails seem to be obscured or dingey. I'm seeking advice on the gentlest method of cleaning and correcting these problems. Thanks!!
