I bought this old Welsh sideboard. I think it was stripped of paint in the past. The wood is dry and needs some restoration. But some say wash with water, some say NO WATER; some say "sand with 200 grit, then apply minwax" while some say sanding will ruin it. One person told me to strip it with an MS stripper using steel wool, when another said, NEVER use steel wood on wood for it leaves tiny metal pieces that will rust... Why is there no professional consensus on how to deal with this?I want to do it right. There is a large green oily stain on the top, with a long oily trail that needs to be addressed. But I haven't been able to find a post that explains how to refinish a pine piece that has already been stripped of its old finish. This wood is very dry, except for the oily stain. So, What should I do? What is the best way to preserve this piece? I will assume that its prior stripping has already rendered it valueless, so no need for me to research that part, I guess. Thanks for whatever help you can offer.
