Help to identify the inlay material of a vintage desk

Post by MoritzD.M »

A terrible mishap happened to me today when I forgot a wet towel on my vintage desk this morning and found out just minutes later, that the inlay had started to change color within minutes.

I tried to wipe it off and immediately started to peel away the upper layer of the inlay.

I am now trying to figure out the best way to repair the damage and have a hard time figuring out what the inlay is made of. It feels rubbery and can be indented easily.

Hopefully, someone can help me to determine how to either re-coat it or replace it adequately.
