I am "NO" pro but I have repaired and refinished many dozens of case goods and chairs and tables over the years. I have always used an oil based varnish made by "Vanguard" which is branded as Van O Var. This has been my go to and has served me well. Vanguard is quick to dry so dust and particles have been minimized in the coatings. I have always been able to get away with on coat of a very thin sanding sealer and a second top coat.
My personal inventory of the Vanguard product has been depleted and Vanguard now only makes commercial finishes for furniture makers so it is not availiable in retaill locations or retail quantities.
I've recently tried "minwax fast dry varnish (not poly) - performance series....which I hoped would give me a similar look to what I achieved all these years with Vanguard varnish.
I have been disappointed as the minwax has more of that" Poly look" to it. I did try thinning the minwax but this did not produce any better results. I want all of my repaired/refinished pieces to have a durable finish and have a reasonably authentic finish look (not modern poly please). I am aware of and have used other finishes ( danish oil , tung oil , french polish).... but do not wish to increase my refinish time too much and dont want to reduce my finish durability below that of varnish.
Can I get a recommendation on an alternative varnish that may be more authentic looking than Minwax?
Quick dry (as I dont have the luxury of a dust free environment)
With a finish that is satin to semi.
Looking forward to some ideas.
Thanks

Re: Varnish brand recommendations
The closest you can get to the varnish you reference is the Target coatings product in the link below. This product dries clear, so you may want to add a few drops of an amber dye. To get more info, talk to Jeff. He can help if you have any questions. Also tell him I said Hello

Re: Varnish brand recommendations
Hello Bob.... I want to thank you very much for the Target product recommendation.
I am in the process of using up my current small batch of minwax...... and will be ordering the Target product promptly.
I appreciate the advice about adding the dye. I've come to expect and want that amber tone from the oil so the dye sounds like it is a perfect solution. Thanks again
